How You Can Help Save the Elephants on #WorldElephant Dayby Susan Portnoy |
Today is World Elephant Day,
a celebration of all the world's elephants and the people and
organizations that support them, and to bring attention to poaching and
illegal trafficking that's led to the slaughter of over 35,000 elephants
per year. The Wildlife Conservation Society states that over 800,000
elephants have been killed in the last three decades. The number is
staggering. The global elephant population cannot survive at this rate
and if we don't do something to curb their decline, they will go extinct
in the wild in our lifetime. What an immense tragedy that would be!
I've
had the great pleasure to see elephants alive in the wild. And it
breaks my heart to think that they could be taken from this earth.
As
a salute to these incredible creatures who've enriched my life, I've
put together a little photographic tribute below and included a few
wonderful organizations you should know about leading the charge in the
fight for their survival.
If you have some extra money to spare, they are worthy of your attention and donations.
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
"Born from one family’s passion for Kenya and its wilderness, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is
today the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation
program in the world and one of the pioneering conservation
organizations for wildlife and habitat protection in East Africa."
You can donate directly to the trust or consider fostering an orphan.
Last year I began fostering a little orphan elephant named Sana Sana
and she's adorable! For a $50 annual donation you can adopt too!
Save the Elephants
"At Save the Elephants,
we believe that humans can help protect elephants and create awareness
of their plight by uniting to spread the word. Any amount of support is
vital to our mission to protect them and provide them with a secure
future."
